Super 8

The very first scene opens on a steel mill, Lillian Steel. In the foreground is a sign, nearly billboard size. It’s a safety sign. The kind that says how many days it’s been since the last accident. There is a man changing the number from 784 to 1 and we know something bad has happened.

As a writer, I can’t help but admire this opening. As a viewer it kept me riveted to the screen and scene two where we meet our main character, Joe, a kid on the receiving end of the something bad in scene one. I won’t say anymore. I don’t want to spoil things. And I want you to see it for yourself without my opinion clogging up your head. But I liked it. I definitely liked it. And Joe was great.

I also got shivers down my spine watching the previews to the last Harry Potter movie. Made me want to read The Deathly Hallows again, reminded me that I still think JK was brilliant.

Anyway, happy 4rth all. I’m going to try to do very little today besides walk up to the top of the hill and watch the fireworks from the steps of the old gym later. I’d just as soon avoid the crowd of downtown and there are usually only a few people there. Maybe I can get a picture. If I do I’ll post it later.

Enjoy the day :)

  1. I cannot wait for the last Harry Potter movie. Those movies made the transition from book to screen without compromising the integrity of the novels.

    Very rare.

    I saw Super 8, btw.

  2. I enjoyed Super 8 as well. If you enjoy monster movies, I've got one I'm getting ready to post on. You'll have to read the review though to see what it is. And I hear the final HP movie is supposed to be great!
