red white and blue

Every day at least once or twice, sometimes 3x, I walk out from my driveway to the road and up to the top of the hill and back. This evening was no exception. I got home from a cookout at my sister’s house in Alna and put my dog on the leash, doused myself with Deet Five Million and started walking. And even before I reached the swamp where all the bullfrogs are I could see the sky at the top of the hill, looking distinctly patriotic. Now don’t get me wrong. I am not Miss Yay America. There is a lot wrong with this country we live in, not least of which is the fact that the people we trust our children with get paid a thousand times less than the people who just polluted the entire gulf coast. Anyway, I get to the top of the hill and there is the sky before me, bordered by foliage, streaked with crimson and deep blue and bright white. It couldn’t be more American. And I think, ok, granted, there is a long list of things I’d change, but honestly, I’m not sure I’d want to live anywhere else than where I am right now.
