A big thank you to Ellie and Jeremy for having this blogfest. It was so much fun coming up with these cuz I love movies. My family has so many quotes from all kinds of movies memorized we could practically converse on quotes alone! Ok, slight exaggeration. But I had a blast with this – as those of you know who played the tiny little contest :)
Anyway, here are my quotes, chosen in part because I actually do use these quotes in daily life. For example, if we were having a family gathering and I was serving dessert to my brother J, I might let him see it and say, “You want this?” (see #8). Warning, expletives ahead (hey, I wasn’t called trash mouth in high school for nothing).
1. “Somebody got to the blood.” Doc (Richard Dysart) says this in John Carpenter’s The Thing, one of my all-time favorite scifi movies.
2. “Excuse me, did IQs suddenly drop while I was away?” Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) says this to some stupid bureaucrat who doesn’t believe her story, in Aliens, directed by James Cameron.
3. “I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time, I’d rather not spend the rest of this winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!” said by Garry played by Donald Moffat. The Thing again. I love this movie. I could watch it over and over. Oh, right. I do watch it over and over.
4. “Oh, yeah? Then why are you following me?” The Empire Strikes Back, the best of the three in my opinion. Irvin Kershner directed. Han Solo (Harrison Ford) says it to Princess Leia. “You must unlearn what you have learned.” Yoda says this. “Surrender is a perfectly acceptable alternative in extreme circumstances!” C3PO (Anthony Daniels) bravely says this.
5. “I suggest a new strategy; let the Wookie win.” C3PO, brave AND diplomatic. Star Wars/George Lucas.
6. “You’ve got to be fucking kidding.” Palmer, played by David Clennon, says this when he sees the alien spidery thing that has grown out of his dead friend’s head as it tries to escape. The Thing, last one I promise.
7. “Is there a problem with the earth’s gravitational pull?” Christopher Lloyd exquisitely playing Doc Emmett Brown in Back to the Future.
8. “Do you know what she did, your cunting daughter?” The Exorcist, said by the demon in Regan, played by Linda Blair. This was directed by William Friedkin and based on the book by Peter Blatty. I think it’s probably the scariest movie I’ve ever seen.
9. “You want this?” This is where Luke almost caves to the dark side. The Emperor (Ian McDiarmid who was also in Gorky Park) says this in a tempting (but darkly creepy) way in Return of the Jedi, directed by Richard Marquand.
10. “Thanks for the ride, lady.” Uttered by Tom Wright, as the hitchhiker, in Creepshow 2. Michael Gornick directed. Stephen King (stories), George Romero (screenplay).
Whew! I think I’m taking tomorrow off!

speaking of zombies...
Here are my faves:
1. Night of the Living Dead – the original, which is a must see for any zombie fan.
2. Return of the Living Dead – this was just plain fun.
3. Dawn of the Dead – (w/Ving Rhames) the scene on the rooftop is priceless.
4. 28 Days Later – my personal favorite and yes, I own it.
5. Shaun of Dead – zombies with comedy – although really, when aren’t zombies fun?
6. Resident Evil – not really a zombie movie, per se, but let’s face it, whatever virus the Umbrella Corp unleashed pretty much turned everyone into what could only be classified as zombies.
7. Resident Evil: Apocalypse – more fun with Mila and zombies.
8. Resident Evil: Extinction – ditto, but in Las Vegas.
9. Dead Alive – Peter Jackson’s first film, I believe. Bloody.
10. The Evil Dead – Bruce Campbell stars in this campy zombie film. Even better? There's a sequel :)
And now for your trivia question…what current television show does Bruce Campbell co-star in? If you can answer correctly, I will send you one of my bookmarks to hold your place in your favorite book :)

A few of my favorite words
Bloody – which I got from reading too many historical romance novels. It was a way for the hero in the story to sound tough without using any swear words. Which is kind of funny when I think about how much sex went on…
Dodgy – I heard this word in a song recently on someone’s blog and it made me laugh. It’s akin to a word we use in my house to describe some of my cats who are a bit untrustworthy and socially maladjusted. We call those cats sketchy, or sketchballs.
Git – Ron used this word a few times in HP, referring to Malfoy, I think.
Fancy – This is one of my favorites when referring to a member of the opposite sex. For example, I definitely fancy George Clooney over Brad Pitt.
Piker – My son brought this one home and it seems to refer to some lazy-ass git.
Shite – My sister was married to a Scotsman for a time and she introduced to me this word which I often use instead of the Americanized shit, which, frankly, just sounds rude.
Snog or Snogging – Once again, thanks to HP I now think of kissing as snogging.
Wanker – Another lovely word courtesy of my former Scottish brother-in-law, as in, he’s a right wanker isn’t he? Not complimentary.
All these lovely words almost make me wish for a re-unification!
Meanwhile, we’ve had snow flying since last night and I am absolutely ecstatic to be home and not having to go anywhere.

Speaking of scifi
Here’s my list of scyfy’s best and worst shows:
1. Eureka: I want to live in this town
2. Star Gate w/ MacGyver, I mean Richard Dean Anderson ;) and yes, I know it was silly at times and the aliens were all too often humanoid, but it was good clean fun, wasn’t it?
3. Stargate Atlantis, which managed to grow on me a little. Col. Shepherd wasn’t too hard on the eyes either.
4. Battlestar Galactica, it goes without saying this is the epitome of first rate scifi and I have yet to see anything better – and I’m including the movies in my assessment.
5. Caprica, I’m liking it so far but where’s it been lately?
6. Sanctuary, I wanted to like it, I really did.
7. Haven, ditto
8. Warehouse 13, ok, it can be juvenile but like Atlantis, it’s grown on me and I have to admit I can’t wait for next season. Plus I really like Claudia. If I could be a girl on a show that'd be it.
9. The Dresden Files, scifi blew it when they didn’t renew this series.
10. Movie of the week, whatever it is you can be assured it will be very much like the Saturday afternoon creature features of yesteryear only with slightly better special effects and probably that other Baldwin brother will be in it, or maybe someone you’ll recognize from a soap opera you used to watch.
Now if only there was a Fantasy channel.

revisions
So, it’s taken me this long to finally organize my revisions for Grimoire onto two 3 x 5 cards, a total of 21 things I need to add before I can consider the tale 'complete.' Then it’s back to Dianne for another read through, see if it’s wrapped tighter, prettier.
Among the items to add are these:
· introduce Joselyn, Leda, and Charity (Arlen’s servants)
· add a little luck before the unfortunate event
· explain the history behind the curse on the Howards
· show the various talents that certain people possess, like Darcy’s ability to feel the emotions of others
· have Vathek (Arlen’s imp) tell her the story of Grace, Lettie, and Yvette’s relationship
· describe in greater detail the ceremony at the end
· send Cato home? (I’m still not sure about this one)
I'd tell you all 21 but there'd be some spoilers so you'll just have to believe me when I tell you I've got some work ahead of me. I am glad I made myself a little list so I can check off each item as I accomplish it. I think it will help me feel like I’m making progress, which is a lot harder now that I’ve finished the first draft. I just have to keep telling myself it’s all going to be worth it in the end. Right? Right.
How do you get through revisions? Do you have a system or do you just wing it?

top ten carry on items
No matter where I go:
1. My favorite outfit – whatever that might be at the moment, but probably a pair of jeans and either a cozy sweater, a button down blouse, or t-shirt so faded and thin it’s like a second skin.
2. A garlic press – because 75% of everything can be improved with garlic.
3. Hope – because without hope most of us would give up.
4. A toothbrush/floss – because if I had to choose I’d rather brush my teeth than shower.
5. Comfortable walking shoes/sneakers – I think this one is pretty obvious
6. A good book – in case I get stuck someone
7. An imagination – if all else fails, fall to daydreaming
8. Curiosity – so I won’t get bored
9. A sense of humour – because shit is going to happen and it’s better to find some humour in it rather than whine and cry about it (Not that I don’t do my fair share of whining and crying – trust me; I do. But sometimes you just have to laugh at the utter stupidity of your fellow human beings).
10. I’m going to hold off on this one until I hear your list…

top ten tv shows
First let me tell you that I could easily spend hours and hours in front of the television, mesmerized by other people's fictional lives. Sometimes I even imagine laying like a sloth on my couch and watching repeats of Criminal Minds all day. But, as I mentioned a while back, something happened to me last summer that focused my attention on writing more than anything else. For example, I was going to watch The Event on Monday but I just couldn't tear myself away from my computer.
That said, here are my top ten tv shows of all time*:
1. Battlestar Galactica (new) - scifi doesn't get any better than this and this really is my most favorite show of all time. It's got great acting, great characters, great special effects, and an enemy that...oh, but wait, that would be telling.
2. Lost - ok, I didn't love the ending, but only because I had already thought of it and was hoping they were going to surprise me. But I loved everything else about this show and I don't think I missed a single night.
3. X-Files - definitely an all time favorite - the smoking man, the three geeks, the conspiracies, loved it.
4. Six Feet Under - I've never in all my life become so attached to fictional characters that I actually almost cried at the last episode. This was a brilliant show imho.
5. Rome - history at its best (down and dirty, brutal, and full frontal nudity) if not its most accurate.
6. Carnivale - imagine you've been transported back to the depression era and you're part of a traveling carnival - except all the tricks and magick is real. Clancy Brown plays the malevolent Brother Justin Crowe countered by Nick Stahl as Ben Hawkins. I only wish it had lasted more than 2 seasons; it felt like it was cut short.
7. Twin Peaks - David Lynch at his best. Donut anyone?
8. Stargate/SG1 - Ok, I know, at times it was cheesy and the aliens were all humanoid (how likely is that?) but c'mon, it was fun and some of the shows where they played with time were the best.
9. 24 - I'll admit I did not watch all 7 seasons but those I did watch were absolutely riveting and I am so glad I was able to watch the dvds because I would've screamed if I'd had to wait a whole week between episodes. Talk about upping the ante!
10. Robin of Sherwood - Starring the delicious Michael Praed as Robin Hood. According to Wikepedia: "Unlike previous adaptations of the Robin Hood legend, Robin of Sherwood combined a gritty, authentic production design with elements of real-life history and pagan myth."
*You'll notice I only included shows that are over - there are many others currently playing I enjoy - Fringe and Caprica being my top two picks - but since they're not over I can't really say how good they are. It would be like reviewing a book I haven't finished. And these are just the top ten that came to mind; there's a lot of shows I didn't include nor did I include cartoons (like Dr. Snuggles, Danger Mouse, Ren and Stimpy, The Simpsons) because I feel they deserve their own top ten.
A big thank you http://www.theqqqe.blogspot.com/ for this post; it was fun!
So now it's your turn. What are your top ten tv shows?
