Papa

In the phonetic alphabet Papa represents the letter. My dictionary defines ‘papa’ as a noun, meaning father, from the Old French.

I never called my dad “papa” (it has a rather pretentious ring to it unless you have an accent, imo) but I’ll share a couple of things about my dad, who is sadly no longer with me.

He loved cats and would talk like a baby to them, which, being a 6’4” guy often looked – and sounded – ridiculously silly but also rather endearing.

He read voraciously and annoyed the hell out of me by always reading the last page first.

He found sublime joy in walking along a warm beach collecting shells.

Thanks, Dad.

  1. He sounds like an awesome guy :)
My other half likes to read the last page of every book I start so she'll know the ending and will tease me about it :P

  2. HA! Never heard of anyone reading the last page first, but I don't reckon that's too much different from my friend who always eats dessert first.

  3. I enjoyed your mini-biography of your father. I called my father "Daddy" of all things. THen when I got older it embarrassed me so I didn't call him anything.

  4. Your papa sounds wonderful. And yes, it would drive me crazy if someone always read the last page first.

  9. My dad is Popa. Yes, I know that isn't the 'correct' spelling (whoever decided that anyway?). I refuse still to this day, as a 47 year old, I will always write 'Popa' on any correspondence or reference to him. Sound it out people!

Stopping by from the A to Z Challenge!

  11. Aw, the big guy had a soft spot for cats. That's awesome. My dad's still with us and going strong, but he's in his mid eighties now, so I know the time left is precious.
