54 days til spring and a nice healthy dose of sarcasm

Of course, in Maine, spring never arrives in March; we're lucky if it gets here by the end of April some years! But honestly, it isn't all about the weather implied by spring - warm breezes, brooks running, birds returning to nest and claim territory - it's about hope. Because right now at 7degrees Fahrenheit, it feels like winter has dug in deep. My cold water pipes froze last night so now I've got the heat cranked up (yay) and a fan blowing at the open cabinets so that maybe I can take a shower later and not look like a scrub when I go to my nephews basketball game later. It's a big fat drag and this is just one reason winter and I are not friends. The other being bundling up.

However, things could be ever so much worse, don't you think? I mean I could be unemployed and...oh, wait I am unemployed!

Yeah. That's how things are around here. Not fun. But I was right about one thing. It could be worse. Which is why I mentioned the 54 days til spring. Because even if spring doesn't arrive on that particular day it's less than two months away and, on that day, winter WILL be officially over. I for one will not be sorry to wave good by and welcome summer's prelude. Just thinking about it now makes me a little warmer and a little happier :)

I WISH my porch looked like this!

How do you get through winter - and no, not you people who love the cold and actually go out and do stuff in it - I'm addressing this question to the people like me who are basically summer people living in the wrong zone. How do you manage?

  1. Really sorry about your pipes!
We should switch if you want milder winters. Of course, it's been freezing here all week, but that's warmer than Maine right now.

  2. OMG I've finally realized that MAINE in the title of your blog means the state and not some German word LOL

  3. Laughing at Dezmond's comment...

I live in the Mount Washington Valley and I was super happy that the temperature was 6 degrees this morning. Not because I love the cold and go out and do things in it (I do not) but because it was finally above zero.

Sorry about your pipes. Mine froze a couple of winters back. They burst and flooded my basement and my first floor. I got a new carpet out of it though so it wasn't all bad.

    Stay warm!

    1. Yeah, it's supposed to creep up into the teens and maybe even 20s (woohoo!) so hopefully I'll get some thawing action. They usually only freeze if it gets close to zero.

  4. We had that bitter cold weather a week or so ago. Just makes me hate January so much. But I have noticed the days getting longer again and that always makes me hopeful for spring. Sorry about the pipes. I had an outside faucet freeze once. Flooded the basement. Not fun.

    1. No bathtub :(

      But I prefer a shower anyway :)

And that's the other thing I don't like about winter! Layers of clothing!!! AGH!

  6. Sarcasm is good. At least you get a spring. Here in Central Oregon, we don't really get one. We go straight from winter to summer [which usually doesn't arrive until mid July - seriously].

  8. Um, it's already spring where I live (in Mexico) and this morning I was complaining about the heat. It's like in the high 80s and 90s. I remember Canada though and suffering through -30 degree days. Yes, spring meant hope.

    1. Lucky you! It's supposed to get up to almost 20 degrees here today. Woohoo!

  9. I'm sorry. Cold sucks. If we got actual cold here, I think I'd turn into a whiny baby. Wait, I think I did, when we had a cold snap.

Summer will be here before you know it.

  10. I don't mind winter, but one morning we went out and it was three degrees Fahrenheit. That's much too cold, even for me.

    1. Anything below 25 is too cold for me and if the wind is blowing that number goes up!

  11. Yah. We haven't had water in our shower for 3 days now. And the ice monster slowly devouring our house spread to the bathroom sink last night. Grr. So. No water there either. Good times! Could be worse. Could be up north in the NEGATIVE TWENTY TWO! gad.

  12. Pipes frozen. Yikes. We had that happen this past week. I don't mind a bit of winter. I don't mind a bit of summer. Really, it all good in moderation.

Now last Monday when we were caught in Erie's storm (they hit a record). That was not fun. Horrible drive home.

Any idea where you'll look for a new job? I am most likely done at the pizza shoppe.

    1. It's warmed up enough now that I have cold water back - Yay! And I'm looking everywhere for a new job. Well...except for maybe McD's, not that there's anything wrong with it but I think the smell of the place would nauseate me after a very short while.

    2. I worked there for a wee little bit once. Hated it. Well, that's not entirely true. Parts of it were okay, but overall it wasn't a nice environment.

  13. Ah, Marcy. Frozen pipes. Not fun. :( I used to live in Mass and know winter in the Northeast can lose its charm pretty quickly. Wishing you unfrozen pipes, a cozy house, and warm clothes until you see winter disappearing and flowers blooming.

  15. You'd think Spring would come sooner in Utah, but it doesn't get warm until May sometimes. What's Spring? We go from winter to summer in two weeks. Not kidding. :)

    1. Well, we do get a spring here, it just doesn't come when I want it to!

  16. Hi, Marcy,

Well you read my winter TIPS.. LOL. I FORCE myself to leave the house. As long as there is some light I can manage. BUT the minute that WIND RIPS into my face I am cursing. Living so CLOSE to LAKE MICHIGAN is a nightmare in the winter. The lakefront is at least ten degrees colder than the rest of the city and the WINDS are an average of 15 mph or more. Add this factor to the single digit or barely two digit temps and we are talking a living FROZEN HELL.

You know I USUALLY ESCAPT to FLORIDA from mid to late FEB to May, but this year with work so scarce.... I KNOW HOW YOU FEEL ... I have to WEATHER this WEATHER...

SENDING YOU a BRIHT SMILE and a BIG, WARM, BEAR HUG!!!!!

    1. I wish we could both go back and meet up again at that museum and then have lunch at that cafe. If I close my eyes I can almost feel how lovely the air was sitting there...*sigh*

  17. *still laughing* I misread your last paragraph. Or perhaps read between the lines.

My brain read '...you people who like this weather can stuff it...'

hate frozen pipes and black ice but love a good storm since I usually bake cookies. we haven't had enough storms lately to justify baking but I might make an exception today.

    1. I would far prefer a good snowstorm to these single digits! At least if it's snowing it can't be too cold but I don't even see any snow in the forecast :(

  18. Ha, ha ... was that comment directed at me: "you people who go out and do stuff in it?" I don't have much use for cold either, if I'm not skiing. And it isn't much fun to ski in single digit weather anyway. The snow is all crunchy and hard.

    1. heheh, well, you ARE one of those people, aren't you? But no, I can't imagine it would be a ton of fun to ski on icy crunchy hard snow never mind the air cold enough to freeze your nose off!

  19. I used to kid my grandparents about why did they leave sunny Italy for cold New York? I assumed when I got old enough I would move south of course . When I graduated college in NYC my pregnant wife was standing there proudly looking on. So... instead of exploring I threw myself wholeheartedly into the career of supporting a family and raising the kids. Scraping ice off the windshield to get into work before dawn. Bah! The story takes a happy turn as 3 kids and 23 years later we are happily married. But now.....with the youngest graduating next year its time to think about moving to a warm tropical place. I love the mountains here and summers are nice in the Hudson Valley but enough is enough with the cold and snow. I look forward to living in a warm place where winter never really intrudes. Hop you find some warmth and some profit this year. Thanks.

  20. I live in the land of totally mild weather. Some people find it totally boring, but I love it. Sorry about all that is going on in your neck of the woods.

  21. Spring has been hanging out in Florida recently and I would be more than happy to see winter back. Granted we don't have endless days of grey and freezing temperatures but I actually like winter quite a bit. Keep warm and hey! Maybe the groundhog won't see his shadow and spring will come early!
