What I need...

1. I need someone who knows about contagious diseases, like the flu.

2. I need someone who works for a power company.

3. And the phone company, any phone company.

4. I need someone in the military, preferably the National Guard.

Can you guess what sort of novel I'm writing? If you said Apocalyptic you guessed right. Currently I'm on Chapter 17, which is after the Flood that occurs right off. That part was pretty fun to write, especially after reading that book about the Johnstown flood. But now I'm at a part where it would be really helpful to have the expertise of the aforementioned. I suppose I could just call my local phone and power company and see if someone would talk to me, let me ask a bunch 'what if' questions - briefly of course. And I do have someone in the military I can contact... which leaves a doctor. Wait! Why didn't I think of it?! My mom is a nurse! I can ask her all these hypothetical questions. She'll be horrified and probably say something like, "why on earth would you want to write about such morbid things?" but I'll bet she can answer all those pesky questions about contagion protocol and drugs and life saving measures...

I guess that means I don't need anything...except maybe for a little of this to come sooner...

Wow. I can't believe all that green. My world is still white. But it's melting... :)

How are your writing adventures going? Is the weather improving? Getting worse (I hope not)? Know anything about martial law?

  1. I hope you find those people! I'm sure you will.
We were warm and humid today. After freezing cold last week, it's quite the change.

  2. Glad you need the info for your book and not yourself. We're in the 40's this week and could get to 50. Loving it!

  3. Oh, what fun! Yes I love doing all the research for a new novel. For my current WIP I'm researching wine, which I have to admit is a little more fun than studying plague. :P

    1. Hmm, maybe my mom is right; I am morbid. I found the plague/flu research fascinating.

  4. Marcy, you might also contact my brother-in-law Larry if you have specific questions about martial law, disaster management, etc.

  5. Seems like you could find what you need on Facebook. Not sure how trustworthy it would be though. :)

  6. I think about details and sources and writing. How much harder was this writing thang before the internet???? Glad you found your source.

Hang in. Spring will come. It always does.

    1. I remember going to the library and bring home a slew of books about Mexico and clipper ships. I still use real books but it sure is a lot easier now!

  7. Good luck. I suspect the research would send my mind off on a number of different trips.
Autumn is coming here. Slowly, but it is coming. Flirting with us at the moment though.

    2. Snowed here today, mostly the entire day. But really, it didn't add up to much. Though right now we have the heat CRANKED.

      Burrrrrrrrr.

  10. Well, I'm glad you found what you need as I can be no help. As for the writing, I'm finally making progress, so I'm happy about that. The weather? You probably don't want to know.

  11. I'm going to need a lawyer soon...for my story! Ask your friends for anything you are looking for. Someone will know someone. Snow is melting here, but there is still a good two feet on the ground. I saw my roof for the first time in six weeks this on Tuesday!

    1. Yup, we still have about that much snow, too. But I saw some bare ground along our paths - actual earth!!!

  12. Any interest in board games? If so, you might give Pandemic a try. Your set up reminds me of it. It deals with disease rather than a flood but requires the same sort of divvying of responsibilities you've implied here.

  13. Spring seems to have sprung here. I think it may be here to stay this time, but I'm happy to simply enjoy it while it lasts.

Good luck with your research. Most state emergency management agencies have response plans in place for dealing with pandemic flu, and I'm sure FEMA does, too. If your mom can't answer all your questions about flu, your state's EMA webpage might have a bunch of general information about it that could come in handy.

    Happy weekend!

  14. Flood stories are among my favorite. I have a story involving a flood that's been in writing storage since the early 70's.

I'm sure you won't have too much trouble finding answers to your questions. People are usually pretty helpful when you find the right ones.
