A Surprise

I hadn't heard of this movie but my son started to watch it and then insisted I watch with him. I'm glad I did because what a little gem of a movie!

The Premise: A group of people are trapped in an elevator and the Devil is mysteriously amongst them.

Story by M. Knight Shyamalin
Screenplay by  Brian Nelson.

If you look this film up on IMBD or Rotten Tomatoes, it doesn't get a very good rating, but all I can say is that those people are wrong, wrong, wrong. I loved this film. It did everything right. Solid performances, great music, just the right amount of creepy, and a perfectly surprising ending.

Anyway. I just had to share, it was that much fun.

Have you watched any movies lately that have surprised and impressed you?

  1. Because of Shyamalan, I hadn't watched it yet.
Jurassic World didn't impress me. Fury Road did, though.

    1. I would've been reluctant to watch if I 'd known beforehand he was involved but it was way better than you think!

  2. Devil does look good actually. I really loved Jurassic World, but I think a lot of that is because I have read the books/watched the movies (they explain a lot of people's "plot holes") and dinosaurs are just awesome. :)

    1. I loved the original Jurassic Park. That first sight of dinosaurs - which looked totally real - was pretty cool.

As for Devil, I think I especially liked that it wasn't in your face horror. It was creepy like The Grudge.

  3. Interesting. The only movies I've been watching lately are on TV. Only Thor surprised me (I hadn't seen it before). Unfortunately, not in a good way.

    1. I watched Devil on Netflix. I thought Thor was all right. Didn't quite buy Natalie Portman as his love interest though.

  4. Interesting indeed. Mind you, my claustrophobic self believes that the devil is always in elevators.
I am not a movie watcher, but like hearing other people's take on them.

    1. I especially liked this movie because I was surprised by how it all unfolded and most movies do not surprise me.

  5. I don't have netflix anymore. or I would watch. I recently watched "Gimme Shelter" and really liked it but I like drama and you like Sci-Fi Fantasy. Anyway since I can't watch Game of Thrones I just bought the books. Did you like them?

  6. I can't watch movies like that. But a few weeks ago I finally watched, "I'm Still Alice" and it was a beautiful movie.

  7. I love when I give a movie a chance and am pleasantly surprised. I do that more now with Netflix than I did before. I've found a few gems, though I can't think of an example off the top of my head.

    1. Yup. Love Netflix. 7.99 a month and no commercials. Can't beat that!

  8. I love Shyamalan. That being said, I don't like his movies because I love Shyamalan, but because to my mind he has continued to make great movies. Devil was a fine representation of his instincts. And it had Matt Craven!

    1. Yes, this one one of his better efforts, like the Sixth sense or Unbreakable.

    1. It's more creepy spooky than horror and gore, which is the kind of scary movie I like.

  10. I remember hearing about this one when it first came out and I couldn't decide if I would be too freaked out to watch it or not - I think I will now! I didn't realize the story was by M. Knight Shyamalin - love his stuff!

I remember I refused to watch Shrek when it first came out because I thought it would be dumb - I finally watched it years later and was so pleasantly surprised by how awesome it was. :)

  11. Marcy, I haven't seen this one and I tend to shy away from scary movies. I'm a big chicken. I just watched Pacific Rim. Can't say I was all that impressed. I wouldn't pay to watch it. That's for sure.

    1. I only like certain kinds of scary movies. They either have to be different/inventive, like Cabin in the Woods (it helped there was humor), or cultish (Evil Dead). Not a fan of slasher flicks or serial killer movies with the focus on how many pretty girls can die in horrible messed ways.

  12. This movie was AWESOME! Getting trapped in an elevator is scary enough, but with a supernatural killer??!! I never knew who was doing it till the end. Loved this one! :)
