The List & They Live

So. I have this list of all the things I need to do before I can put my house on the market. Things like paint the bathroom (completed), have the septic pumped (done), and paint the exterior trim (I bought the paint but haven't started the job). There's lots more on the list - I think I have a total of 14 items - but there's also a few check marks against things I've done. Not to mention all the stuff that isn't on the list, like raking the yard, keeping the house cleaner than normal (for practice), and getting my mower fixed so I can mow the lawn. My mantra - I can only do what I can do - is coming in quite handy.

In a way, it's a lot like revisions, or at least, the way I often do revisions. I have a list of all the things that need fixing and I go through them one by one. If I have trouble with one, I move on to another and come back. Just like the house. If it rains, I'll paint something inside (there's plenty of that to be done), and if it doesn't then I can started on the exterior.

Meanwhile, because my creative energy is at an all-time low, I'm allowing myself to do whatever, which turns out to be fanfic based on the John Carpenter movie, They Live. In my story the premise is this: Two Girls. One Big Problem. Aliens.

In the movie, it was two guys, played by Keith David and Roddy Piper. It was a pretty silly movie, especially the longest ever fight scene, so I figure I can have fun with it.

Now. Tell me what you've been doing? Something fun I hope! Ever see They Live?

  1. Hope you burn through your list of things quickly. And you get some nice days so you can paint the exterior of the house.
They Live was not one of Carpenter's better films.

    1. It's fun, but the girl was creepy looking. I'll have to check out Hell comes to Frogtown :)

  3. They Live is one of the greatest cinematic masterpieces of all time. Also Roddy Piper is lovely, we met him at Monstermania a couple years ago. Waited over an hour and discovered once we got to the end of the line that the wait was caused by him taking ten or fifteen minutes to talk to each of his fans and make them feel special.

    1. That's cool you met him and he was a nice guy.

  4. That's the one with the sunglasses, right? If so, yeah, I loved that movie. When I was a teen. So, no taste. I have no idea if it would hold up now.

Keep going at your own pace. It'll all get done eventually. I'm kind of in the same boat at the moment.

    1. It probably wouldn't hold up, but I still think it's a fun movie. You moving, too?

  5. I sympathize very much. I had to get our place ready to sell last year, pack everything by myself, and have junk (old computers, garage stuff and tools) hauled away (we had lived there about 6 years). Hubs couldn't help as he was recovering from months in the hospital after a heart attack. I felt overwhelmed, but I managed to get it all done by concentrating on one task at a time. I do hate moving though. . .

    1. It sucks doing everything by yourself. And yes, having the list helps because I know I don't have to do it all today. Just one task at a time like you said.

  7. One of my mantras has always been I can do anything - if I have to.
Love that you are ticking things off your list.
    Good luck.

  8. Good luck with that To Do list!

I have never seen They Live, but now I'm gonna have to see if I can find it somewhere. I wondered what you were writing fan fic for. Interesting!

    1. My son was watching it and it occurred to me...what if I rewrote the story a bit?

  9. 'Do what you can with the time that you have' is pretty much my mantra too ;) Good luck with your to-do list, but take some time off from it too!

  10. I've never seen the movie but I think it's great you are having fun doing some writing with no stress attached to it. Good luck getting your house ready. I'm sure that is an exhausting experience. Take care!

    1. Definitely exhausting but it will be worth it in the end.

  11. I don't even want to think about the prospect of moving, and having to box up almost 45 years' worth of accumulated stuff. Rather than deal with it, our kids will probably burn the place to the ground after we're gone.

But you? You will get it done. All in due time, and then a whole new adventure in a whole new house awaits. It'll be exciting!

Very cool that you're letting your creative juices simmer by writing fan fiction. Have fun with it!

    1. It's probably a good thing my house couldn't accommodate any more stuff. As it is I have a lot of tossing to do still. I can't wait to be done with it and begin my new adventure :)

  12. Now I'm not sure if I've seen, They Live. Seems like a silly movie that I would have seen but I'm not sure.

I'm downsizing (but not moving), and I have to tell you that I'm enjoying it a lot. I do what I can do in a day and I sit down and rest when needed.

    Happy Weekend :-)

    1. It is a very silly movie, but it is also John Carpenter, so...

  13. Oh, that movie is a hoot. I bought a shirt that made me think of it. The front has beautiful flowers with big letters in white saying "rebel". I couldn't help thinking of the aliens' subliminal messages. Happy writing! And don't work too hard (sounds like you're being relatively gentle on yourself - well done).
