Revisionland and Supernatural

In my writing world, I last told you I was playing with fan fiction. That lasted about a week so I pulled up my second draft of Fairy Tail, which I mentioned recently in regard to character motivation. Having pulled myself through the mire of the first third of the tale, I decided to read the rest (again) quickly, and finish my chapter by chapter outline (which will eventually turn into a synopsis). This led to the realization that the final two thirds of the tale were in an even bigger mess than the first. Which prompted a lot of notes in my outline, highlighted in blue like this:

Ch. 1 Bubble, Bubble, Toil and Trouble
In which the fates observe the changing of the guard in Faerie: for a year the Unseelie Court will hold sway… [this could be deleted as this info could be inserted elsewhere]

Ch. 10 Into the Woods This chapter still needs reworking. Maybe Mag could show Lyra something rather than tell her

Ch. 18 p. A Secret
Matisse makes an unexpected trip to Faerie (don’t we get to see this? Who does Matisse go to? What information or advice does she get?

Or, my favorite:

Ch. 20 Summer Solstice... which Matisse, as planned, interrupts. What’s the point of that?

Suffice it to say, I have my work cut out for me, which means, I need a reward...

Which leads to Supernatural.

Anyone else watch this show? I admit it took the whole first season before I was sufficiently engaged, but now, 8 seasons later, I'm pretty invested in the lives of Sam and Dean Winchester. Like their father before them, they're hunters of the supernatural, mostly creatures to start, but then demons (I adore Crowley), and angels*, who aren't always as nice as you think they should be, except for Castiel, who's pretty awesome. But all this hunting and killing the bad thing wouldn't be near as much fun if it weren't for Sam and Dean themselves, because they are definitely characters to root for, and their relationship is...very complicated. Which keeps it interesting.

  1. Good luck pulling it all together. Don't wait too long or those notes will end up making less sense than what you originally wrote. (Too much distance has a way of doing that.)

  2. Sorry you're seeing so much needing revision. But at least you see the need. Good luck with it!

    1. Exactly! Nows the time to revise, before I stupidly send it off before it's ready.

  3. Hi Marcy -- Thanks for popping by my blog today! I'm an enthusiastic devotee of fan fiction (reading, not writing) but mainly slash, I'm afraid, LOL! Some of it is extremely well written in my opinion and would be eminently publishable, were it not for, you know, copyright reasons and explicit porn.

    1. I may go back to the piece, but it needs something and I'm not sure what it6 is yet.

  4. But you've got something down on the page. That's infinitely better than starting from nothing.

I watched seasons 1 & 2, maybe season 3 of Supernatural. I just didn't get all that invested and gave it up. Not sure why. (Might be the creature of the week thing. Not big on creature of the week.)

  5. Sigh on the need for major reworking. Good luck. I hope it starts to flow for you soon.
Love the title of your current read. Review when you are done?

    1. Yes, lots of work, but I'm glad I'm seeing the problems rather not.

  6. I didn't watch last season. I loved it until about season 7. They are in season 12. Wow! That has to say something about their loyal fan base.

    1. I'm on 9 and admittedly certain story lines are a little dull and/or repetitive (I won't say what cuz, spoilers)but I like how complicated Dean and Sam's relationship has gotten and I wonder how they can fix it.

  7. I don't know Supernatural at all. But 12 seasons! They're clearly doing something right.

    1. It's the characters, imo. It's always the characters. Plus, Dean is pretty hot. That probably helps :)

  8. I watched Supernatural via Netflix but lost interest around Season 8 I think. I haven't seen it in awhile now.

    1. I'm up to 10. I can see why you lost interest (a lot of the conflict between the brothers results from them doing the same thing - again) but I'm still enjoying it.

  9. I tried soooooooooo hard to get into Supernatural, but have failed. A few friends and a cousin are obsessed.

I've found that fan fiction can be great for inspiration to start/continue existing non-fan fiction works. I've got a whole box full of Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and loads of other fan fiction stories that were super fun to write.

  10. Re-working is vastly better than staring at a blank page/screen.

I haven't tried Supernatural but my granddaughter is fanatical about it.

  11. Hey, Marcy,

Sounds like a FUN challenge. At least you KNOW where you're heading. And with time, you'll get there.... Hope you're enjoying your summer!

Let me know if you're heading south anytime this winter. I'll be in Orlando from Thanksgiving until June...

    1. Yes, I do know where I'm heading so that does make it 'easier.' And if I do head south I will def let you know :)

  12. Marcy, Sounds like you are ahead of the game. You have a story you like, you know to remove the fluff and to show instead of tell. Those items are so hard for most people to see. Enjoy revising your story.

I took a stab at fan fiction but I picked someone few people have heard of Matt Nathanson) and spent most of my comments telling people who he is and to check him out instead of getting the feedback I'd like on the writing.

    1. Well, there's a reason it's called a work in progress, and, as each chapter gets a check mark for 'revised' I get a little happier :)

  13. I never know how to translate Unseelie Court :( I had it this summer while doing Cassandra Claire's trilogy and it gave me headaches :)

    1. That would be hard to translate. I might stick with the original words, which I believe are Scottish in origin and NOT in my English dictionary.

  14. Dang, girl, judging by your notes, you don't cut yourself any slack, do ya? That's a GOOD thing. I've edited works by writers who claimed their manuscripts were completely "ready to go"... and they full of major errors. Far better for us to judge our work harshly than to have readers do it after it's rushed to publication before its time.

Nope, I've never seen that show. Most evenings, my nose is stuck in a book.

  15. Good for you for the progress on hashing out that outline! I watched Supernatural for several seasons and loved it 'til I overloaded on the angel vs demon arc. I'm watching Grimm (old ones coz that's what we get here), and I'm loving it. Good luck with your outlining! :)

    1. Yes, the angel demon thing does get played a bit. I'll have to check Grimm out.
