Monday

Well, here we are again. The beginning of the work week for most of us, in which we have 5 whole days before the lovely wonderful much anticipated weekend. I don't know about you but work (that thing I do to pay the bills) is just not my bag baby. Know what I mean? Or are you one of those fortunate people who actually has a job they love?

I did like my job* once. When I first started. But now, almost fifteen years later, the only thing I still love is when kittens and puppies come in (because, hey, who doesn't like kittens and puppies?), and certain animals and their people. For example, there's this nice lady who comes to us who has the two best pets in the entire world. One is a King Charles Spaniel named Ruby, who is just the sweetest, most loving dog I have ever met.

I'm not a huge fan of little dogs, but if Ruby needed a new home I'd jump at the chance of being her new person. The other pet this nice lady has is a Maine Coon cat named Miley, who is equally loving and sweet, and gorgeous to boot. She actually looks a bit like this cat:

But as much as I love animals, I would still prefer to be sitting at my desk every day tapping the keys and creating stories rather than checking people out and trying to explain why they should spay/neuter/vaccinate their pets. To be honest, I'm bored with my job. The funny thing is I never tire of my stories or my characters because there's always a way to make them more exciting or interesting.

So, the question today (which, if you answer in the comments, will gain you entry into the great give away **) is, do you love your job? And if you don't, what would you rather be doing?

* for those who don't know, I work at an animal hospital

** in which I give away great books like the entire Twilight series, Tad Williams' Otherland series, the first two books in Terry Pratchett's Discworld series, a first chapter crit, and Roget's Thesaurus. All you have to do to win is be a follower and comment.

  1. I love what I do in my day job - I love being what I am in my day job. It's other people who spoil it for me! LOL!! I work for an organisation I believe in - and they truly make a difference globally so I truly feel privileged to be working for this organization. But my enthusiasm for what I do is tempered by internal politics, management and office dynamics. If only these people would go away, I'd be happy! LOL!

I'm glad the animals continue to make your day job bearable! I hope you find your mojo soon.

    Take care
    x

    1. It seems like people are always the spoilers. I'd like my job better if not for the bosses and some of the owners that come along with their pets :)

  2. It has its moments, but I enjoy what I do. Besides, I can blog and watch movies at work. Now that's just awesome!
And we'd have a houseful of pets if either of us worked with animals.

    1. That would be fun to be able to blog and watch movies at work! And I did have a houseful at one time. Down to five cats and a dog right now.

  3. Well, I can't say I love hair lopping but I'm not bored. I worked in a law off for like ten years. Boring. Stressful. And lots of anxiety.

Anyway, like you I'd rather be writing.

    Hugs and chocolate,
    Shelly

    1. I would never want to work at a law office - definitely too stressful! Hair lopping could be fun, assuming you have a client who knows what they want.

but i love my sub job, i choose my days, i get to teach and i dont ave homework, it also puts off the cleaning...

  5. I've often thought of volunteering at the animal shelter nearby, but I just know I'd come home with every stray dog. Also, I'm not sure I could put the animals "down" if/when the time came. Very hard. My cousin works for Animal Control, and it's the same story.

I think every writer wishes they could stay home and make up stories all day.

  6. I love what I do. Granted. I get burned out. I loved what I did in my other career as well. But burn out was rife there too. (And in a far more dangerous way...read drugs and alcohol...) I think it would be really hard if your job didn't evolve for 15 years. Didn't change. Plus to throw in dealing with the public. Gak!

    1. Exactly. It's pretty much the same except when someone new comes in, which is why we like puppies and kittens :)

  7. Ruby and Miley look absolutely gorgeous.
Glad you find great satsifaction in your job.
Yes I think my ideal job would be to be a successful author.
I haven't always enjoyed the jobs I've done for various reasons, but I hope my new one starting in Sept is rewarding.

  8. Since I'm self-employed I DO love my job. My husband and I work together on Karen's Cookies which we can do out of our home. And this supplements the income from what I do for WiDo Publishing. I love making cookies and sharing them with the world. I love creating books and sharing them with the world. So I feel very happy with both my jobs! In between I write my own books but it's not that great of a paying job.

  9. Love? No. But some days are good and some days are bad. And it's light years better than working in retail (the job before), so no complaints. (That's what my blog is for.)

    1. Ha! I try not to complain here too much because it would probably just drive folks away!

  10. I could totally work at a shelter. I love pets especially dogs. I have two of my own.

  11. Today was the first day of school for students, and I made a conscious effort to focus on my 24-year career and the profession that pays for the mortgage and the groceries instead of thinking about submissions, WIPs, and the short story I have under contract. It's hard, though. After 24 years, I would kind of like to make a change. But I can't afford it.

    1. I'd find it hard, too, although there are a few other advantages to teaching, like summer's off, vacations, federal holidays, and all the bureaucracy that goes with it :)

  12. My "job" of 23 years, went away over three years ago...thanks to the economy and if I'm honest, internal politics. Since then,I worked for a year in a cheese/gourmet food shop, and now work for our town's Elder Affairs (aka Council on Aging), while writing on the side. What part of all that do I actually love? The writing on the side, of course!

  13. I love teaching. I love preparing for class and I love having conversations with children. I love writing musical plays for them and then getting the chance to listen to their beautiful voices speak and sing. Kids are my thing baby. They, like kittens and puppies, are innocent and untainted. The real thing.

I wish I was teaching this year. I am going to be one very irritating wife/mommy unless I get a job!
But you never know, I might start writing again.

    1. I think it's hard to find a job you love because you need to figure out what you love before you old enough to know for sure.
