what's up in the blogosphere

A few things. One is this ...

a nifty little contest hosted by Unicorn Bell, the other blog I belong to. It starts next week and if you have a finished manuscript that's ready to send out in the world maybe you'll check it out. There will be a ton of posts about the entire query process from writing it to finding the perfect agent to send it to. Not to mention the editor judging at the end in which you could win a request from one of the wonderful publishers we've recruited.

Two is The Quintessentially Questionable Query Experiment, where Matt MacNish critiques queries in expert fashion (hint, hint, for those participating in the aforementioned). Yesterday was the query BEFORE Matt got out his red pen. Today is the after. By the way, he's really good at this.

Three, if you like contests, is this one: Aspiring Writers Competition with The Reading Room where you can win $1,000 for the first 450 words of your middle grade or young adult novel.

And last but not least is a question - because I know you're all dying to comment in order to win one the fabulous prizes being offered in the great give away and this will give you a reason:

What book would you like to see made into a movie? Who would you cast as the lead character(s)?

I'd like to see In the Garden of Iden made into a movie and I imagine Juliana Margulies (as she appears in this pic) as the botonist, Mendoza. In Kage Baker's debut novel, set in the 24th century, the Company recruits orphans from the past, renders them all but immortal, and trains them to preserve works of art and extinct forms of life (for profit of course). One of these is Mendoza the botanist who is sent to Elizabethan England to collect samples from the garden of Sir Walter Iden. While there, she meets and falls in love with Nicholas Harpole, who is secretly Protestant at a time when Queen Mary and Philip of Spain are on a Catholicizing rampage. Mendoza knows Nicholas is probably doomed but love has a tendency to make people do desperate things...

  1. The premise of that story is just astounding. Sounds like that would make for a great movie.

I'm feeling a little MG this morning so I wouldn't mind seeing The Red Pyramid by Rick Riordan turned into a movie. I'm not quite sure who would be great to cast as the brother and sister. Would be interesting to see.

  2. I'd love to see all of Terry Pratchett's books filmed - especially Night Watch with scrummy Daniel Craig as Captain Vimes!!! Take care

    2. Sword of Shannara is a total ripoff of tolkien. Tolkien had two hobbits from Hobbiton. Brooks had two guys from "Shady Vale". There were nine ringwraiths. There were nine skull bearers. They escaped the ringwraiths by going to Rivendell where Elrond and the Elves magic protected them. IN Brooks' book, they escaped the skull bearers by hiding out with the King of the Silver River. Water is used in both examples. And the comparisons go on and on.

Sword of Shannara is a best-selling book that point for point stole from the Fellowship of the Ring. Terry Brooks has since that time, redeemed himself by finding his own voice. But he should be ashamed that he so blatantly stole another writer's work. Random House should be ashamed they published it.

As for the book that I would like to see made into a movie? The Belgariad by David Eddings.

    1. This is an easy one whereby you don't have to do anything except comment - which you already did.

  7. That sounds like a really interesting book; I've never heard of it before.

I want to see The Looking Glass Wars by Frank Beddor made into a movie. It's a YA/Fantasy story loosely based on Alice in Wonderland (but much more complex).

    1. I read this book and if done right it could make an awesome movie. Key words: if done right. Are you listening Hollywood?

  8. Thanks for the heads-up. Book into a movie...I'd have to say Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill. Not sure who I'd select as the MC's.

  9. OOO! Exiles, Ruins of Ambrai. Melanie Rawn. Cailet would be played by, ummmmm....not a clue...I would say Dakota Fanning but she's probably too old for the first book. Maybe the second? Hmmmm.

  10. I'd love to see The Dark Tower make it to film (I know they are trying to get that started now, but I've wanted it forever). I don't like Javier Bardim as the lead, though (like him, but not in this role). But I can't think of anyone else, because I used to picture Roland as Clint Eastwood. He's a gunslinger.

  11. Not heard of In the Garden of Iden. Sounds like an intriguing romance.
I think 'Cosmic'by Frank Cotterill Boyce and 'The Chaos Walking' Trilogy by Patrick Ness would make fab films.
