The Cephalopod Coffeehouse - Enchanted, Inc.

Welcome to another edition of the Cephalopod Coffeehouse. The idea is simple: on the last Friday of each month, post about the best book you've finished over the past month while visiting other bloggers doing the same.  In this way, we'll all have the opportunity to share our thoughts with other enthusiastic readers.

Today I am going to tell you about Enchanted, Inc. by Shanna Swendson. Apparently this is a whole series and the latest is book 9. Enchanted, Inc. is the first in the series, released in 2005.

Katie Chandler is an innocent in New York City with an awful boss when she's recruited by MSI - Magic, Spells, and Illusions, Inc. There she discovers that a lot of the strange and unusual things she's been seeing are actually real, but enchanted so that normal people can't see them. But Katie can't be enchanted and this makes her very special indeed. She can see through magical enchantments like hidden clauses in contracts, fraudulent spells, and magically disguised intruders. And now Katie is going to help MSI thwart the plans of an evil competitor threatening to sell black magic.

What I liked best about this book:  Katie and her ever so practical attitude about everything. Being from a small town in Texas, Katie first thinks the strangeness of the city (fairies, a gargoyle) is just a part of New York City and everything she'd heard about the place. When she finds out differently she easily accepts this as if it makes perfect sense, not wasting time in denial. The other characters were interesting, and I enjoyed the story.

What I didn't like: the lack of tension. But. Sometimes it's nice to read a book that doesn't keep you up all night on the edge of your bed.

If you want something fun, light, and magical, this woulkd be a perfect book.

    1. Yes, sometimes it's nice to have something cozy and safe but fun.

  4. Okay for an early teen? My daughter can't get enough fantasy and a nine-book series would keep her occupied for a while.

    1. I could make a list for your daughter (The Last Unicorn, the Prydain Series, The Earthsea series...and oh so many more) but I won't, haha. Yes, I think it would be ok. There's a little romance, maybe some kissing, but nothing too risque. I don't remember any profanity specifically but the mc is in her 20s so the book is likely aimed at that age group. Oh, wait...give her Roger Zelazny's Nine Princes in Amber, that's an good long series I LOVED and have read again.

    2. Nice list. The Last Unicorn: she knows the movie. Pyrdain: we did Book of Three as an audiobook and she loved it. She tried Black Cauldron on her own but it didn't take - surprising. I think it's better. She is interested in Earthsea for the Miyazaki connection. I don't know Nine Princes at all - might have to try it.

She's working through the Throne of Glass series right now. Do you know it?

    1. well, she must be someone if she's got 9 books in a series. Maybe someone will make a show like they did with True Blood. It would be fun.

  6. Sounds like an interesting read - a little similar in setting to Cassandra Clare's series, but less dark by the sounds of it.

  8. Definitely one to check out. Goodness, I think I read 10 books last month, but I think Hidden Deep by Amy Patrick was my favorite YA. It was equally tied with an MG, Just Breeze for best over all. =)
