IWSG - Rituals

It's time again for The Insecure Writers Support Group and this month's topic is rituals. A lot of people have rituals for when they write. Maybe they need their favorite pen if they're writing on paper, or need to have certain things around them (coffee???). I am not one of those people. Well, let me clarify. Generally I write on my laptop and as long as I have that I can write anywhere. Coffee is good, a tasty adult beverage is always nice, but I don't need them to write. On the other hand, if I'm writing on paper, I do need my favorite pen: a Pigma Micron 005 point pen. I can write with an 01, but I prefer the 005 for a nice fine line. However, none of this guarantees I'll get in the zone. The zone comes and goes, like a muse. Sometimes she's there spurring me on and other times she's just not. I will say that I almost always get good writing done on Monday nights. That's the night I get together with a few other writers. We check in before, then write for an hour, then check back and chat. For some reason (habit, perhaps?), even if I was totally unproductive the week before, I always produce on Monday night. So maybe the best way to get in the zone is to create the habit of writing.

Remember, the question is optional!

May 6 question - Do you have any rituals that you use when you need help getting into the ZONE? Care to share?

The awesome co-hosts for the May 6 posting of the IWSG are Feather Stone, Beverly Stowe McClure, Mary Aalgaard, Kim Lajevardi, and Chemist Ken!

So, how about you? Do you have any rituals or things you do to get into the zone?

In other news, you may have noticed my new header pic, courtesy of my son the birder. That little guy is a Prothonotary Warbler and he does not come to Maine very often.

I have also read three more books: The Naturalist by Andrew Mayne, and A Trail Through Time by Jodi Taylor, and The Girl Who Drank Down the Moon by Kelley Barnhill.

If I had to pick a favorite, it would be The Girl Who Drank Down the Moon. What a lovely magical tale.

As for television (of which I've watched far too much), I finished both Star Trek Discovery and Picard and am now sad because there are no more seasons to watch. I loved both shows to pieces and can't wait for the next seasons. If you're a Trekkie, I highly recommend both shows. I would also recommend My Brilliant Friend, which follows two girls growing up in Naples in the 50s and 60s. Sadly, my sister and I only have one more episode of that. We also only have one more episode of Westworld but many seasons to go of The Americans, which we are still enjoying very much.

Have you read any good books lately? Got any shows to recommend? Staying sane?

I feel fortunate that I don't get bored like others I know. There's my current WIP (29K), lots of books, shows, walks, art, and gardening to keep me plenty busy.

Now, tell me how you are.

  1. Sounds like the other writers keep you accountable and productive on Monday night.
    Picard was excellent, wasn't it?
And your son's photo is amazing.

    1. I LOVED Picard, and if you haven't watched Discovery I highly recommend it. My son is pretty awesome :)

  2. Favorite pens . . . yeah. That's kind of a deal breaker for me, too. The pen needs to feel good in my hand and the ink needs to flow easily. No globs, though. LOL The Girl Who Drank The Moon was wonderful!

  3. I've always found that a good writing group definitely keeps me working forward on projects.
Way to go with your writing, reading, and all that you do. Love the picture of the warbler!
I can recommend: Steal Like an Artist by Austin Kleon (non-fiction), and Dragon Assassin (fiction).

    1. Yes, I think being held accountable, even if it's just with friends, somehow helps me be more more focused. Thank you for the book recommendations!

    1. Yes, I'm up to 16 books read for the year! That's almost one book a week, which is much better than last year :)

    1. Isn't he a stunner?
And if you liked Picard, I think you'd like Discovery, too :)

  6. LOVE the pic - you always have the best headers!!
Loved Picard too. I liked the 2nd season of Discovery much more than the first - hoping they keep the vibe going!

  7. I like those pens. I have a couple that I use for my bullet journaling experiment. My favorite writing pens are the Pilot precise V5 or the G2—in my preferred colors, of course. I may or may not have a scary amount of each in my closet.

    Love the Warbler picture!

  8. Hoping to get back into the zone again soon, somehow. For now, I still sit my butt in the chair. It's a start.

  9. I am a creature of habit and if I were a writer I suspect routine would be my friend.
Love the feathered enchantment which is your new header - and a big thank you to you and your son.
I am currently reading The Dictionary of Lost Words by Pip Williams. And loving it.

  10. That warbler is a very handsome fella. Nice of him to pose for your son. :)

When you mentioned your "favorite" pen, it made me think. I don't have a favorite pen, per se, but I don't like to write with a pencil. It's gotta be a pen. But I DO have a favorite mug, favorite bowl, favorite fork, and favorite spoon. I use that same mug over and over all day long. (Pink Freud) The bowl is just a cute little cereal bowl with flowers around the edge. Don't remember where I bought it, but it's MINE! (HA) The spoon came from a Chinese restaurant that used to be near us. We went there for my birthday one year, and I told my hubby how much I liked it, so he was gonna (gasp!) steal it. I said NO, so he talked to the server, and when he told her it was my birthday, she gave it to me. (She was also part-owner of the restaurant, so it was cool.) The fork is the only one I have left from a set I bought before I got married. When our daughter worked at Pike's Nursery, she carried lunch to work with her every day. Problem was, those forks she toted to work rarely found their way back home again, so now, I only have one of them. So, I guess I DO kinda have rituals. (Just not for writing!)

    Take care.

  11. Yeah, I'm used to keeping busy on the computer and with projects and such, so I'm at no loss for things to do. I don't have any good book recs as I haven't read anything new as of late, and as for TV, I think today's post did well enough for that ;)

  12. The warbler pic is so cute. I do think habits/rituals can help, as long as they're not too onerous out of avoidance. Great IWSG post!

  13. I found it hard to read at first under quarantine, but when I started choosing only short, fun books, it went better. This is apparently not my moment for serious tomes. @samanthabwriter from

  15. What a lovely yellow little bird!
Cannot say I agree with you on new Star Treks, Discovery betrays everything Star Trek stands for and Picard was at times very boring with uninspired Picard himself, but I did love seeing Seven of Nine again and Deana Troi too! I found both shows a travesty of the very idea of Star Trek (clean, calm, scientific fantasy based on logic, science and camaraderie, not wars, violence and characters with no charisma).

  16. I like your Monday evening gathering idea. I'm well, been reading a lot, riding a bike a lot, and last night right before sunset, I went out for a 2 hour paddle in my kayak, watching the sun set behind the marsh, then turning around and watching the moon rise.

  17. That warbler is beautiful! I'm like you, nowhere near bored, but I'm envious of Jeff's kayak ride. :) Gardening has replaced weightlifting since my gym closed. Today I may take a walk in one of our many nice parks. Be well, and Happy Writing!

  18. We loved My Brilliant Friend! Can't wait for future seasons. Could be a little while, due to COVID...

  19. I agree on having to have just the right kind of pen when writing on paper. I also need narrow ruled paper. My fine motor skills aren't great, but I can write more legibly in narrow rule.
