a conversation
my son and I are walking in the woods with the dog. He's listenting to the birds. I'm just walking fast like I do. And Jonah is romping about. We come out onto the street at the top of the hill and he makes me stop.
"Listen," he says, "Those are goldfinches."
I listen.
"Are those the little yellow birds that chase each other?" I ask.
"That's them."
"They're happy go lucky little creatures aren't they?"
"They should be; all they do is hump and fly."
On the down side, they only live about six years.

ReplyDeleteLove it! I'm visiting my sister in Pittsburgh and she has tons of birds out back. We even caught a few humping, yesterday. I really enjoy listening to their songs and trying to determine if there are any similar to the ones back home in my yard. Thanks for sharing!
ReplyDeleteah, they eat too, don't they?
ReplyDelete**still laughing**
haha. Birds always are such rich fodder for poetic expression.
ReplyDeleteThat is hilarious! How old is your son?
ReplyDeletemy son is thirty so...not a kid anymore. A big kid, maybe :) Strangely, he's totally into birds and I never in a million years would've guessed.
