Sunday Pics

Well. I haven't done a Sunday pics in a while so...

I will begin with Sven, my new kitten

I got him in October - let's call him a birthday present to myself - spotting him on Facebook at The Animal House, a local place for pet stuff and adoptions. I'd lost my awesome black cat, Jasper, a while back and here was this little guy showing up on my Feed in need of a home...well let's just say I was down there pretty damn quick. He's still absolutely adorable and I love him to pieces.

Then there's the pawn shop, which has been fairly quiet until last week. Here's a few pics of various places.

Last but by no means least is this Cooper's Hawk that came to visit the shop. I took some pics with my phone but couldn't get any decent shots. Luckily, my favorite birder (my son) came by and got some great pics. He has this massive zoom lens, and if you want to see more awesome pics of his, check out my facebook page. I post a lot of the pics he sends me.

 

In other news, I have only read two books this year, which is a bit sad, and watched very little television. We are still watching The Americans and only have a few episodes left til the end. I admit I am very worried for many of the characters. Watched The Dead Don't Die last night which was funny, probably mostly because of who was in it. I have been writing fairly diligently - my current work in progress stands at 50k - querying, and playing too much Scrabble - my average score is 373 and my average word is 24.5, which is pretty good although admittedly Scrabble on line is easier to get higher points than the actual game.

And now, I'm off to kill zombies with my brother :)

7 Days to Die, Puppy Update, Birds, and All the Light We Cannot See

My apologies for not returning sooner with the promised review. I have been horribly busy juggling a number of demands on my attention. One is a new game my brother introduced me to.

It's wicked fun. Not only are there zombies, but you have to build yourself a safe place and collect useful items like food so you won't starve, wood and stone to build tools, and anything else to help you survive the 7th night when the horde comes. If you make it through that, then on the 14th day, there will be more...As usual I've died a lot.

You can also play on line with friends (I play with my brother) and partner up, which makes things a lot easier - especially when your brother is an experienced zombie killer :)

Attention grabber number two is my current wip, which I've been making steady progress on (27K) and of course there's the puppy, who is pretty irresistible...

He can hop into that chair all by himself now.

As for my thoughts on All the Light We Cannot See...

This book takes place during WWII and is told from alternating view points. One is Marie-Laure, a blind girl who sees more without her eyes than many people see with. The other is Wernor, a boy with a talent for electronics, specifically radios, who soon becomes part of the Nazi war machine. I think the title sums up beautifully what the book is about, because there IS a great deal of light in this world many of us don't see, either because we can't, won't, or, it isn't visible to us. I think this is   which is one of the most beautifully written books I've had the pleasure to read. The way Marie-Laure sees things is so artfully described and Werner, this boy who really has no interest in politics, who isn't bad at heart, gets dragged into the war because of his obsession with radios. I can't help but feel a little sorry for him even though he ignores so much because of his love of radios. How the two are connected I won't reveal but do read the book. I recommend it.

Zombie night

No the zombies didn't show up at my at my house but I did go over to my brother's on Saturday to play Left For Dead II, in which you and three other players are trying to make your way through the zombie apocoloypse. This is a multi-player game you can play on-line or, if you're like my brother, you just set up a second computer so you can play with your sister :)

But wait, it got better! Not only did we play Left For Dead, but we watched another episode of The Walking Dead (season 3) AND had marinated steak cooked on the grill with garlic mashed potatoes (my specialty).


Now that's what I call a good zombie night :)

 Rick? Or Shane? Personally I think Shane is a hot head and sooner or later he's going to get somebody else killed. I just hope it's blondie there.

the other thing

the other thing I wanted to do more of was write by hand. I had a whole week of not being able to revise my current project (which was on my computer) and had to find something on paper to work on instead. It was either that or not write at all. So I dug up an old story and wrote a bit, by hand. Liked it. Think I should do more of it. The hard part is not letting doodling in the margins entice me away from the words. That's the good thing about typing. I never dawdle and doodle.

Do you write by hand? What part? All of it? Or just the beginning?

Oh yes, and my son and I have been watching The Walking Dead. Have you seen it? What a great show! I love how it doesn't go the way I expect.

speaking of zombies...

Here are my faves:


1. Night of the Living Dead – the original, which is a must see for any zombie fan.

2. Return of the Living Dead – this was just plain fun.

3. Dawn of the Dead – (w/Ving Rhames) the scene on the rooftop is priceless.

4. 28 Days Later – my personal favorite and yes, I own it.

5. Shaun of Dead – zombies with comedy – although really, when aren’t zombies fun?

6. Resident Evil – not really a zombie movie, per se, but let’s face it, whatever virus the Umbrella Corp unleashed pretty much turned everyone into what could only be classified as zombies.

7. Resident Evil: Apocalypse – more fun with Mila and zombies.

8. Resident Evil: Extinction – ditto, but in Las Vegas.

9. Dead Alive – Peter Jackson’s first film, I believe. Bloody.

10. The Evil Dead – Bruce Campbell stars in this campy zombie film. Even better? There's a sequel :)
