Prometheus

Saw this movie at the imax theatre this weekend. I was really hoping it was going to be as good as Alien or Aliens. And it was in many ways. The acting was excellent. I thought everyone played their role to perfection, especially Michael Fassbender who played the role of the David, the android. The visuals were spectacular, exceeding my expectations, and the ship, Prometheus, was just plain effing awesome. Exactly the sort of ship you'd need for what they were doing. In fact, I want one.

But ...I had trouble with motivation, that is, the characters' motivation. I didn't understand why people did certain things. It didn't make sense to me given what I knew. Wesley Lovell said in his review   "It's a striking composition that's burdened by frustrating unanswered questions that distract from the greater themes of faith and religion in science." And that pretty much sums it up.

Have you seen the movie? If so, what did you think?

  1. I know nothing about the movie, other than someone told me a character looked vaguely like me. I'm sure I won't be able to figure out which character she was talking about.

Alien freaked me out, so I'm not sure if I'll see this one.

    1. hmm, I'm not sure which character they might've meant since you don't look much like Charlize Theron or Noomi Rapace. There were a couple of harrowing bits but not as much as in Alien or Aliens, imo.

    1. It's worth watching, just not as brilliant as I hoped.

  6. I want to see it but will wait for DVD.
It doesn't seem like it would be that hard to write a decent script that tells us why people do things and thus make for believable characters.

    1. well, I'll disagree a little, it CAN be hard to write a decent script with believable characters but since Ridley Scott has already done that with both Alien and Aliens I assumed, silly me, that he would be able to do it again.

  7. I was pretty disappointed. I had such high, high expectations. I mean, ALIENS. But honestly, other than David the android I didn't enjoy much of it. My favorite part was the very, very last scene...

    1. I did enjoy it, and I wasn't bored for a single second. I just didn't understand why certain people did the things they did, what was motivating them. Which means that somebody failed in the character development department.

  8. I haven't seen it, and after reading this, I probably won't bother to get it on Netflix, either. I have zero interest in a movie where the special effects are supposed to cover for lack of plot/character development.

    1. Like I said, it is worth watching, and I don't think the special effects were intended as a cover for lack of character development. Nevertheless, character development was lacking and for me, characters are 80% of the story.

  9. It's a movie that the more I think about it, the less I liked it. Too many holes in plot and character development.

    1. lack of character development and leaving the audience (those with brains anyways)with more questions than they went in with.

    1. It is fun on the big screen with all the 3D effects and actually feeling like you're right there.

  12. It seems like all the big event movies that are coming out this summer give me a case of the meh-s. And last summer. And the summer before. I don't get out to the movies much.

    1. me neither, but I really love the movies, just wish I had more time to watch them all. I've already missed a few, including the Avengers, dammit.

  13. I've not seen any of the Alien series so I think I'll wait until an anthology is released on DVD. I really like Fassbender so I'll likely see it anyways, but I've heard that the unanswered questions thing make it really annoying.

  14. I was disappointed by it. As you say, the acting was good and the visuals were amazing, but the plot holes were big enough for the spacecraft to fly through! :)
