A Maine lobster bake

As you may remember class, we were talking about a lobster bake...

an old oil tank cut in half

This is what bakes the lobsters, and everything else. The one pictured is not my brother's but it looks quite similar. The locale is a bit different however...lol. My brother set his up at the edge of his lawn on cinder blocks. The seaweed goes in first, followed by the lobster, potato (wrapped in foil), corn, onions (I think they get wrapped, too), clams, and eggs on top. Top it off with seaweed, light the fire and in about 40 minutes everything will be ready.

There were maybe 30+/- people there, lots of kids, perfect weather, no mosquitoes, and a sunset that was unbelievable. I would have a picture of it (and a bunch of other stuff) if I had remembered to bring my camera (duh!).

This weekend I'm going to see Elysium with my other brother and son AND I may have come up with a new title for my novel which is still going by it's working title. My editor wants to sleep on it but she sounded hopeful and so am I. My book needs an official title!

So. What's new with you? Doing anything this weekend? Enjoying the summer? Reading a good book? Do tell...

  1. No mosquitoes? Now that is rare. Sounds like a great time.
Hope the new title is the winner. Don't worry, my second book went without a title for a long time. (I even sent it to my publisher that way.)
Seeing The World's End this weekend and my hopes are high for it!

    1. Aren't they gorgeous? They live at the botanical garden in Boothbay, not too far from my house and such a beautiful spot. Oh, and I actually did free a couple lobsters that someone gave me once. Neither my son or I could put them in the pot so we drove down to the beach, took their little elastics off their claws and threw them back.

  7. I had no idea there was seaweed involved. Strange. We just cook everything over a fire until it turns black. :P

    Have a great weekend!

  9. Never have been to a lobster bake. Is the seaweed for aroma or for keeping things from burning (providing moisture?)

I'd love to hear what you think of Elysium, I'd like to see it.

    1. The seaweed provides the moisture and insulation. Basically everything gets steamed. The cool thing is it's all ready at the same time.

  13. I am hoping for lobsters too...boiled not steamed, but succulent none-the-less. Cross your fingers for me...it's not cast in stone yet.

  17. Sounds heavenly!
It is warming up here so things are good
Alas most lobster caught in Oz waters goes to the export trade which means that which is left usually sells for about $40- $50 a pound.
But it has been a great season for prawns (big shrimp) so we have been having those nearly every week, yum!

  18. Sounds wonderful! I've been to Low Country boils, clambakes, oyster roasts, and crab feasts, but never to a lobster bake. The only think that surprised me was the eggs. I had no idea eggs went into the mix.
