v is for villain

we all know who they are and how delicious it is to hate them. Just think of Snape and the awful Dursleys in Harry Potter. Or Ambrose in The Name of the Wind (oh, how I despise him). Or Nailer's father in Ship Breaker. There's a villain in just about every book I've ever enjoyed from whatever it was that held Charles Wallace in A Wrinkle in Time to those evil siblings, Jaime and Cersei in A Song of Ice and Fire. Villains give your hero someone - or something - to fight against, a way to prove themselves, and often the means to evolve.

who - or what -  are some of your favorite villains?

  1. Most of mine are from movies - you can tell what I spend a lot of my time doing!

  2. I take great pride in the fact that I always knew Snape was a more complicated villain.

    They usually are!

    And great teachers too.

  3. Let's see if I can spell her name right - erm - Marquis de Mertueill from Les Liasons Dangereuses - a BAD woman if ever there was one!!!

    Take care

  4. Dr. Frank-N-Furter from RHPS, of course, and... hmmm... my favorite fiction doesn't usually involve villains who stay villains.

  5. At the risk of showing my weirdness, I liked Frankenfurter from The Rocky Horror Picture Show.

  6. I like certain of the Disney villains (that's the first thing that popped into my head). The queen of the villains would have to be Maleficent from Sleeping Beauty.

Good luck with the remainder of the A to Z Challenge!

  7. Alex, there are some great movie villains - altho that could be a blogfest of its own :)

QE; I never knew for sure about Snape but it was brilliant on Rowlings part.

Old Kitty; I concur! She was evil!

Beverly and Joyce; I loved Tim Curry in that role and I won't say how many times I went to see RHPS!

Shannon; that's a great one and good luck to you, too!

  8. Scar in The Lion King, but I think it is because he looks like my brother.

  10. Oh! Frank-N-Furter was no villain, he was a freaky teenager's fantasy (mine)!!!

I was a bit obsessed with Laclos' book Les Liason Dangereuse and I agree wholeheartedly about Marquis de Mertueill. She made Valmont look noble.

I could talk about villains all day. They are so much fun.

  12. I like villains that have secrets and vulnerabilities...especially ones that make you sympathize and relate to them.
