the other thing

the other thing I wanted to do more of was write by hand. I had a whole week of not being able to revise my current project (which was on my computer) and had to find something on paper to work on instead. It was either that or not write at all. So I dug up an old story and wrote a bit, by hand. Liked it. Think I should do more of it. The hard part is not letting doodling in the margins entice me away from the words. That's the good thing about typing. I never dawdle and doodle.

Do you write by hand? What part? All of it? Or just the beginning?

Oh yes, and my son and I have been watching The Walking Dead. Have you seen it? What a great show! I love how it doesn't go the way I expect.

  1. The Walking Dead was superb. I can't wait for the second season!

When I write short stories I always write the first draft by hand, leaving a space between each line to make edits. Because I can't go back and delete unwanted words or lines, it forces me to really think about them first.

  2. I never write by hand if I can help it. I've always had handwriting problems, but I can type really fast, so it's much easier for me to get my thoughts out that way. I'm always surprised at how many writers talk about loving to hand-write things! To me, that would be like torture.

  3. I only write letters and notes by hand. If I wrote a MS by hand it would take forever! I write pretty slowly.

Nope, havent seen Walking Dead. I've tried to cut back on my TV time so I can read and write more, but I'm missing so many good shows.

  5. I find when I write by hand I write more elaborate scenes. I think it's the slowness of it. I usually start my scenes by hand and then go to the computer.

  6. I love writing first drafts by hand. I feel more creative away from the computer. Once I get the bones of the story, though, I have to get to the laptop to edit and sort it all out.

I doodle in the margins too, but I'm usually working something out in my head while I do it. :)

  7. Just notes and lists upon lists of "things". Maybe I should try it!

  8. I write the whole story by hand first and then go back and input into the computer. Takes care of first round edits that way! Of course, NaNo taught me I could type it out as well. I'm just not that fast.

  9. For some reason, I prefer handwriting outlines, query letters, pitches and synopses.

  10. I haven't heard of the Walking Dead, but now I'll have to look it up.

I haven't done any handwriting of my works in a long, long time, but if I don't beat these carpal tunnel symptoms in my left arm, I might be reduced to it in order to finish Voltage ...

  11. I used to write by hand all the time, but suddenly, one day, I started typing my drafts and I haven't looked back. The few times I've tried to hand-write something, I end up with a hand crap from holding the pen too hard (or something)... guess I'm out of practice.

Oh, and the doodling in the margins is obligatory when you're writing by hand... I'd be hard-pressed to find a hand-written document that didn't have at least something scribbled in the corners :-)
