I really wanted to stay here

Ok, well, not really, but I wanted my character, Kass, to stay here. I went to their website and checked the place out and it's very interesting. A lot of the rooms have the original tile in the bathrooms, chenille bedspreads with bluebirds on them, and some pretty cool vintage lamps - some of which I'd be tempted to snag. One room even has this old pink gas stove from the 50s (non-working of course) and a lot of the rooms have garages and sunny places to sit outside your door.

Unfortunately, I don't think Kass is going to be able to spend the night there. If the place was a few hundred miles down the road I might say yes but at this point in the story I'm afraid it's another night on the road. But you know, this is what we do to our characters. Make things hard for them. Throw obstacles in their path. Push them into situations that will test them at every point along the way so that by the time they reach the end of their journey they have passed through that ring of fire and come out the other side.

But don't worry, at some point I will let Kass sleep in a real bed again. Just not yet.

  1. Too bad she can't stay there. I like the motel's name. But yeah, keep things hard for your character.

  2. I like how you did such thorough research. To be honest though, the first thing I thought of when I so that photo was the movie Pyscho. No sure why...

    1. probably because there's a definite 50s air about the place - as for the 'research' it's called google earth :)

  3. See now, I thought you were going to move a similar hotel a few hundred miles down the road so she could stay in one like it...love that as writers, we have so many possibilities!

    1. I could, but I like to keep things as factual as possible.

  6. Hey, it's your book! You can either "move" that motel to a better location to suit your story, or "build" another one with a similar name, and same kinda decor. Oh yeah, I wrote about Maine on my blog today.

    1. Nah, I'm going to stick to the facts - at least, the geographical ones. Loved your post!

    1. Hmm, maybe. It looks cool in the dark with the sign lit up but kind of ratty in light of day.

  9. Those rooms have a lot of character to them. They almost live all by themselves.

And what a heartless person you are, making Kass sleep out in the cold. Or car.

    1. I agree. They were interesting rooms - more so than the cardboard cutouts like super 8 and best western. And I am mean. But it's for a very good cause :)

  10. We are writers, and doing mean things to our characters is what we do. I wonder if there's something psychologically to that?

    Wait.

Let's not think on that. It could lead to places we may not want to venture.

  11. I do that with my characters as well. I love to mess with them, especially when I know where they're staying.

  13. Writers can be evil. LOL.

I know my characters must be terribly sleep deprived; I don't think they slept for days throughout my NaNoWriMo novel. And no beds, either.

    1. But we have to be evil. How else will our characters evolve?
