Sunday pics - whale watch

I know I complain about my work sometimes but there are a few good good things and last weekend's whale watch was one of them. We departed out of Boothbay Harbor (my favorite town in the area - reminds me a lot of Chatham, MA, where I grew up) where this cute little boat was tied up next to us. Wouldn't it be fun tooling around the harbor in it?

Then we passed this adorable little cottage which sits on a small island in the harbor. There's a house there, too, and quite a nice one, but I rather liked the cottage.

Or maybe this place would be nice...

Or possibly here, The Cuckolds, a lighthouse just off Cape Newagen.

But after that it was the open sea for 18 miles...

Until we came to the whale feeding grounds, where we saw Finbacks and dolphins cavorting - and yes, they were cavorting! Unfortunately I only got pics of the whales and very few good ones. But here they are:

Not the best pics, but we did see a lot of whales and even a cow and her calf, and the day was absolutely gorgeous. Tomorrow, in lieu of a post, I'll have more - including the seals :)

Have a lovely Sunday.

  1. All of the photos are great! I think you did a good job with the whale shots. Amazing to watch, aren't they? I've only seen whales from the beach - from a boat must be incredible.

  2. Awesome pictures. Not sure what your job is, but awesome you get to do things like this.

  3. Your photos are so classic Maine, or at least what comes to mind to this landlocked Coloradoan. Love that lighthouse photo. And the whale watching would be magical. I'd be terrified the entire time if I were out in a boat (I have an irrational fear of the ocean), but I'd still do it for a chance to see some whales.

  6. These pictures just took me away and really make me want to go to Maine. A trip to Maine is on our bucket list because my husband's Scottish ancestors came there back in the 1600's, and some still live there. In Kittory, I believe.

  7. Great photos! I went dolphin spotting a few weeks back and it was amazing; didn't get as good shots as you got of the whales though.

  10. In 1987, I was on the island of Kona in Hawaii. Every morning at 7 Am whales would come on shore and stay there for a couple hours. They watched the peeps while we watched them. It was awesome...words have never been able to describe what I felt inside those 4 mornings I went for coffee to watch them.

    Hugs and chocolate,
    Shelly

  12. What a glorious way to spend the day! My sister-in-law has been on quite a few whale watching trips, and she never tires of them. I can see why. Just beautiful.

  13. *gasp*!!! I definitely would not complain about work if it came with whale watching! Looks like such a wonderful day!! My family used to vacation in Hyannis in the summer - and Chatham was one of my FAVORITE places. How wonderful to have grown up there! I haven't been to the East Coast in ... gosh, almost 15 years. Your photos remind me of how much I love it there!
