but, you may wonder, just what exactly are the Magellanic Clouds? In fact they are known as the Large and the Small Magellanic Clouds, both dwarf galaxies which may be orbiting our own Milky Way. There is some thought that both galaxies were once barred spiral galaxies.* Here is another spectacular view of both galaxies (far left) taken by ESO's (European Southern Observatory's) Very Large Telescope in the Chilean Atacama Desert.
