Orion

Orion, sometimes called The Hunter, is one of the most noticeable constellations in the night sky. The photo above was taken by Rogelio Bernal Andreo in October 2010 and shows the surrounding nebulas of the Orion Molecular Cloud complex. Also captured is the red supergiant Betelgeuse (top left) and the famous belt of Orion composed of the OB stars Altitak, Alnilam and Mintaka. To the bottom right can be found the star Rigel. The red crescent shape is Barnard's Loop. The photograph appeared as the Astronomy Picture of the Day on October 23, 2010.

  1. So purty!! Our world is just astounding and spectacular. And Betelgeuse is not just a wacky character from a bad 80s movie. lol (Loved Beetlejuice as a kid)

  8. The Orion nebula is amazing. I like the fact that our town turns most street lights out after midnight. The sky is so much more amazing when we turn the artificial lights down.
