I'm it

I've been tagged and tasked with answering any four questions from the following:

1. What are you working on right now?
2. How does it differ from other works in its genre?
3. What experiences have influenced you?
4. Why do you write what you do?
5. How does your writing process work?
6. What is the hardest part about writing?
7. What would you like to try as a writer that you haven't yet?
8. Who are the authors you most admire?
9. What scares you?

Before answering I'd like to thank Charity for tagging me and maybe you'd care to answer a question in the comments...?

My answers are 5. I'm mostly a pantster. I did outline one novel but ultimately I think I do better with a less rigid process. 6. There is never enough time. 7. I have an idea for a literary novel but I'm waiting until I'm a better writer to begin it. 8. A few of my favorite authors are Ursula Le Guin, Marion Zimmer Bradley, Terry Pratchett, Phillip Pullman, Laini Taylor, Andrew Smith, Dan Simmons, Stephen King, George RR Martin, Charles deLint, Patrick Rothfuss, Paolo Bacigalupi, and China Meiville - and that's a short list! 9. Spiders.

Your turn :)

  2. Time is my main obstacle right now. I'm a panster too! But you know, if you've got an idea for a novel, you can start working on it now. Even if it's just jotting down ideas, scenes or writing character cards....I wouldn't wait because you're a very good writer and know never know what tomorrow will bring. (:

    1. I do have some notes and character stuff but I know I'm not quite ready to write this story yet.

  3. Hard to believe that you are frightened by anything. I have a feeling the spiders go Eek when they see you!
    Btw I'm 'it' on Wednesday.

    1. I'll come by to see you - and yes, spiders do run when they see me, probably because I have a book in my hands I'm going to smush them with! Bad spiders!

  4. I have to outline or I'd be lost.
Not working on anything now although I do have an idea. Not much different than what I already write though, so trying to adjust it.

  5. I only outline the major plot points. Loved learing more about you.

  8. Enjoyed the answers to your questions. I'll go for #4. I write what I do because I'm a smile in the dark. Life has been in some bright moments and pitch black deep ends where hope seemed impossible, yet it was always there when I had the strength to grasp it by the comet tail and make moves. Because I'm one person of many minds that must all be heard and listened to, sticking to one little corner of genre doesn't fit me. It closes me in and I must write freely.

    1. Yeah, I like writing different things, too. It's more fun!

  9. From the list of authors you love, it sounds like the novel you are waiting to start is going to be a literary fantasy? :) I sure hope so. And I hope you don't wait too long. As the saying goes, we can always fix what's written!

  10. Enjoyed the answers, Marcy. Taylor is such a poetic writer, especially for YA.

  11. Why is it that everyone seems to be frightened of spiders? I just found one lurking behind my bedroom door, and I just shrugged and walked past.

I'm now disappointed I didn't take a picture of that spider collection at the fair (not real spiders) just so I could post it somewhere.

    Now ladders. Ladders scare me.

    1. Sorry, there's lots of bugs I can tolerate but spiders aren't on the 'approved' list. They're on the get the eff out or I'm going to kill you list.

  12. I'm with you on 9. I love Paolo, too. I went to a seminar by Ursula. I kept the pen she signed my book with. :)

  13. I like lots of the same authors you do. I have so many ideas for books floating around, I hope I get to them all someday.

  14. I'll answer two. I write what I do because it's my most favorite type of story to read. And one day I'd like to write a paranormal version.

  15. I enjoyed reading your answers. I understand how you feel about literary. I feel that way about sci-fi. I love to read it and want to write it, but it requires real technical and original world-building. Too hard!! lol

    1. Scifi can be hard, but research isn't and my imagination loves world-building. Plus the whole discovery aspect of scifi - anything could be out there!

    1. yeah, spiders are scary and sometimes they move much too fast!

  17. Amen on #6. There is never, ever enough time. I'm guilty of wasting some of it myself, but I get more than enough help from the rest of the world using up the rest!

I've never really minded spiders - they eat other bugs, which I hate a lot more. But those water bugs with the million legs are super creepy.

To get serious (maybe too serious) for a minute, what really scares me the most is the thought of not being able to write. Of something - money, life, family, my own blocks - stopping me from writing. That's terrifying.

    1. Oh, and I'm so glad to see you name Ursula Le Guin on your list of favorite authors! She's one of mine, too, but she always seems to get left off of the top lists. I've always wondered if it's because of her gender, the genres she wrote, and the time period in which she was writing. I didn't ever discover her until I was out of college, which seems ridiculous.

    2. I agree - NOT being able to write would be horrifying! And I've loved Ursula LeGuin ever since I read The Earthsea Trilogy. I also loved The Left Hand of Darkness which was really written before her time, imo.

    3. Completely. She wrote it in 19-freaking-69. I had to check the date, because I still can't believe she wrote it so early.

  18. Let's see, what am I working on? A more ambitious book than my last one, and I'm not sure yet if it's gonna end up being three separate books or one uber long one. How's it different? Because I'm writing it, silly. Which experiences? All of 'em. The good, the bad, and the ugly all influence who we are as people, and in one way or another, that's gotta influence our writing, don't you think?

    1. I think it's good to be ambitious - that's how we stretch ourselves :)

  19. Eeep. Pantsing. I just can't bring myself to do it.

    1. No kidding!! I envy the pantsers... life seems so much easier that way. But I always end up having to untangle really ugly, messy, difficult plot and character mistakes whenever I do it. *shudders*

    2. I've plotted before, and it worked out great, but for some reason I haven't been able to repeat the performance. And I don't think one way is easier than the other. Writing is hard and that's that.

  20. You admire many of the same authors I do. And I'm a pantser. I can't manage to plot. My stories refuse to stick to anything I plan!

  23. I love your blog layout!! Marion Zimmer Bradley is one of my favorite authors, too. I still have my huge copy of the MISTS OF AVALON that I bought in middle school, and I read it every few years. She's an amazing writer!

  26. Lots of great authors there. My mom is scared to death of spiders so she made sure her kids wouldn't be by not making a big deal when one came along. We grew up in a lake house with lots of trees and TONS of GIANT spiders, so you can imagine how hard that must've been for her. But, to her credit, none of us kids are scared of spiders. Altho, I sure the heck don't want them in my house. lol
