Sanibel Island - The Bailey Tract

One of the things I love about Sanibel are the bike paths. They go just about everywhere and one of the first things we did was rent bikes. It's easy to get around that way because there are no hills and it's a great way to see the island. Another cool thing about Sanibel is that more than half of the island is made up of wildlife refuges, the largest being the J.N. "Ding" Darling National Wildlife Refuge. The Bailey Tract was much smaller, but a very short ride from our condo.

 There were lots of birds

A turtle (actually there were two but the other was fast and scurried across the path into a little stream), and then this surprise...

I was glad he was across the water. But then we saw this guy...

He came out from beneath the walkway which we had to cross to get back to the way out. I was a little nervous, I admit, and at first I didn't want to cross. But he was much more interested in getting where he was going than in anything I was doing. I still didn't get too close, though! We went back there a few more times but didn't see any more alligators.

  1. Now that's something you don't see everyday...
Alligators can move really fast, so you were wise to be cautious.

  2. I've seen birds, turtles, lizards, and snakes since I've been in Florida, but I haven't seen any gators yet. My significant other is saddened by that fact. I'm okay with it.

  3. Uh, yeah, I would have been a little freaked by an alligator sighting too!

  6. That's a big gator! My husband's parents live in Naples, FL, so we always see a ton of alligators when we visit. I'm always amazed that you can spot them just about anywhere. I love your photos! Sounds like you had a wonderful vacation! :)

  7. More than half the island is wildlife refuges? Love it. And would definitely give the alligators a LOT of room.

  8. I was that close to a bear once (as close as you were to the alligator). Yeah, that's too close to that kind of creature, even if they aren't paying you any mind.

  9. Oh you did so much better than me. Heart palpatations would have had me immoble until that alligator dashed back into the tall grass. And even then, goodness help me, I would have needed a change of clothes lol!
