Good God, what is that thing?

That was my response to my son upon seeing this pic. Honest to God, I didn't recognize it as a turkey. My son says they've nicknamed him Skeletor...

These birds are little nicer to look at...

A female Cardinal, puffed up against the cold

A Red-shouldered Hawk

A Common Eider, male, juvenile plumage, transitioning into adult

And a Downy Woodpecker

Bitterly cold here in Maine. Sadly still reading the same book, but 30K on my current WIP and I finished watching the first season of The Good Place. Awesome.

So, how's things in your world? Hot? Cold? Ever seen such an ugly bird?

  1. Quite the season finale, wasn't it? Where could they possibly go from there? Season 2 does not quite go where you'd expect it to.

Is that first bird sick? It looks sick.

  2. That turkey looks like it's had a very, shall we say, challenging life.

    1. I would like that better than bitter cold and windy to boot.

  4. Used to own turkeys, your turkey is a looker compared to mine!

  5. Turkeys are such ugly birds that we sometimes forget they could be cuddly too, I remember watching videos at Facebook with them being petted and enjoying it heaps... not that I'd ever like to touch a turkey.... ewwwww..... or a chicken either.

    1. this turkey is particularly ugly imo. But I'd hug a chicken; they're soft :)

  6. Turkeys aren't exactly "lookers," are they? I'm glad Ben Franklin didn't get his way. (If I remember correctly, he preferred the turkey over an eagle as our national symbol.)

Your hawks have red shoulders? The ones we see here have red tails. Hmmm, I wonder what the significance to that might be...?

    It's warm here. (Sorry!)

    1. Pretty sure there's a Red-Tailed Hawk...yup, google confirms with pics :) Yes, I'm glad the eagle is our symbol as well.

  7. At a local pond I've seen big geese with huge growths on their heads, so I have seen an uglier bird. ~grin~ They don't seem to mind. We have light snow and seasonable cold in Ohio. I'm adding a chapter to my current WIP most every day, but at the expense of reading anything by others. What can you do? Advancing this story is my therapy against real life doldrums. Happy Writing!

  9. I wonder if that turkey was trying to look "not worth the effort" just before Thanksgiving.

We're getting a spring teaser today (highs in the 60s) but the forecast says more snow is on the way. *sigh*
